A leaf from a printed Book of Hours, use of Metz, on heavy vellum, by the renowned printer, Simon Vostre (1486-1520), printed in Paris 1513. The Metalcut is ascribed to Jean Perréal of Lyon (1455-1530). This leaf, from The Office of The Dead and features thirty lines of printed text in a Gothic script. The Office for the Dead includes prayers that would be said through the night before a burial, or on the anniversary of a loved-one's death. The text is surrounded by woodcut borders, two of which feature scenes from the Dance of Death. This dance is a medieval representation in which a skeleton representing death leads a procession of others to the grave. Verso: thirty lines of printed text in a Gothic script.
