Artist Biography:

Maria Sibylla Meriam [1647 - 1717] was the daughter of the well known Swiss engraver Mathäus Merian the Elder. She documented insect life in all its stages while placing her work in a religious context and expressing high standards of scholarly posturing. After she divorced her husband; moved to Amsterdam and continued her research on insects. At the age of fifty-two she and her daughter set out on a scientific exposition to Surinam (South America) where she became severely ill and had to prematurely leave and returned to Amsterdam. As soon as she had recovered, she started her preparation for her findings from Surinam which was published as a magnificent volume.
