Artist Biography:

Anton Maria Zanetti- the elder [1679– 1767], A Venetian draughtsman, printmaker, connoisseur, and collector and befriended and patronized Venetian artists. In the late 1720s he published a series of prints, mainly after these drawings, in which he revived the technique of chiaroscuro woodcuts in three or four colors. His taste embraced both classical and Baroque; he made lively engravings after drawings by Castiglione, while his book Delle Antiche Statue Greche e Romane was important to Venetian neoclassicism.

Giovanni Antonio Faldoni (1690-1770) Italian Engraver, moved to Venice in 1723. From 1726 Faldoni engraved a large number of plates for the sumptuous two-volume publication entitled Delle antiche statue greche e romane, published in Venice (1740–43) by the Zanetti cousins. An engraver of impeccable quality, he produced some outstanding portraits of famous artists, including Marco and Anton Maria Zanetti the elder, both after Rosalba Carriera, Sebastiano Ricci, from a self-portrait, and Luca Carlevaris, after Bartolomeo Nazari (1699–1758). Faldoni also engraved religious subjects after Giuseppe Camerata I, Sebastiano Ricci, Palma Giovane and Stefano Pozzi, three portraits of Jesuit priests and a picture entitled Holiday, derived from a lost painting by Pietro Longhi (ii). With Marco Alvise Pitteri, he was one of the best reproductive engravers working in 18th-century Venice.
