Description

This is a leaf of incunabula from the Speculum Historiale Vincent de Beauvais, c.1190 - c.1264, French Dominican friar. He was the author of three of the four parts of the Speculum majus, a summary of the knowledge of his time. The "History" epitomizes the story of man since Adam as it was understood by 13th-century scholars& It is based on the Chronicon of Helinand of Froidmont (d. c. 1229). Johann Mentelin printed the Historiale on December 4, 1473 at Strassburg. The large folio leaf measures 430 x 290 mm. in totality and contains 62-lines of Roman type (7 & 8) printed double column in Latin. There are versal letters in red & blue and rubricating throughout. The Verso: contains the same lines type and layout. (Goff V283, C 6246, Oates 79, Proctor 212, ISTC iv00283000, BMC I 57, GW M50587) This leaf contains minor staining and two small worm bore in the bottom margin.
