Description

This is a full-page incunabula leaf woodblock print from the book "Rhodiorum Historia" or the History of Rhodes by Guillelmi Caoursin. William Caoursin was a French humanist and not a member of the order but besides fulfilling his obligations as vice-chancellor was employed to function as the Order's historian. Caoursin's history was, a humanistic text that was part of a political program designed to win Christendom's support for the Hospitallers of Rhodes in the fight against the Turks. It was printed by Johann Reger in the city of Ulm on October 24 1496. The woodblock print measures 155 x 210 mm with a Latin title: "Emissary at Rhodes sitting in official capacity before 3 low court Turks". The total leaf size is 275 x 195mm. The Verso:contains 39-lines of gothic type (3:92) printed single column in Latin.
