Description

This is a hand written manuscript leaf from a Koran, Kashmir, circa 1835, on paper, (240 x 140 mm. or approximately 9.25 x 5.625 inches). The peak of excellence of the Arabic scripts is considered to be the 16th century under the Safavid sultans. But some of the work produced in the early 19th century is a close rival. A special style developed in Kashmir typified by the liberal use of gold especially in rulings between the lines of verse. This Koran is unusual because the Arabic naskh is surrounded by Persian a commentary on the text in a more sophisticated nastali'q script. This combination gives a most imposing appearance and grandeur to the whole. This page is one of about a third which have survived. View the Verso of this leaf. The condition of this leaf is minor thumbing but otherwise a fine leaf.
