Description

Title Page- Lyons: This is a leaf from the book "La Sicilia" by Filippo Paruta, which is a History of Sicily in Medals & Coins. It spotlights coins and medals from the colonization of Sicily by the Greeks to the reign of Philip IV. The author Paruta (1550?-1629) was a theologian, jurisconsult, historian, numismatist, and poet. In addition to this history of Sicily in medals, he also wrote a number of poems in the Sicilian dialect. This is from the third edition of La Sicilia, which was first published in 1612 and also saw a subsequent, 18th-century, edition. The title-page has a large and finely etched vignette showing a common design of early coins from Palermo-a head sprouting three legs, in this case surrounded by stalks of grain, signed "Jo Ang Caninus deli," "Seb Fulcarus Incid.". The leaf's folio size measures 370 x 235 mm and contains 16 lines of script. The verso is blank. There is some foxing and small damp stains and tears around the edges.
