Artist Biography:

The two volumes of "Picturesque America" describe and illustrate the scenery of America identified by State and published by D. Appleton and Company of New York in 1872 and 1874 and edited by the romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant and with a similar layout of Picturesque Europe (three-volume illustrated set of books published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. of London, Paris and New York in 1875). Picturesque America’s dissertations and wood and steel engravings based on the paintings of some of the best American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, such as John Frederick Kensett, A.S. Hazeltine, James D. Smillie, J.W. Casilear, Thomas Moran, and others, claimed to promote a growth of tourism and the historic preservation movement in the United States.

William Cullen Bryant [1794-1878] was born in a log cabin near Cummington, Massachusetts; with his family living in America for many generations. His father was a Doctor who later became involved in politics thus becoming a State Legislature, Bryant studied law in Worthington and Bridgewater in Massachusetts, and he was admitted to the bar in 1815. He then began practicing law in nearby Plainfield. Bryant became interested in poetry early in his life and his father directed him to follow the writings of Alexander Pope and other Neo-British poets. He became successful at an early age and carried throughout his life.
