Description

Title Page- Rotterdam: This is an extremely rare leaf from "Spieghel Der Schrijfkunst" by Jan van den Velde. Printed in 1605 it was one of the greatest and most beautiful writing-books of all time and certainly the most important and influential ever to appear the Netherlands. This book incorporated every style of writing with unparalleled virtuosity including the making of letterforms in any conceivable shape. This important work is inimitably complicated, yet always tasteful with harmonious scrolls, and sometimes whimsical, bizarre, but always lively figures of humans and animals ornating his calligraphy. This stunning engraved title-plate with its frame of scrolls, allegorical figures, men writing in books, interspersed with writing and drafting instruments is the perfect example of Van den Velde's art. The leaf measures 216 x 325 mm. in totality and contains nine lines of gothic fractur script surrounded by the designs mentioned above. There is damp staining and some foxing but not as to degrade this beautiful and rare leaf.
