Description

This is an incunabula leaf from Der Heiligen Leben: Sommertiel und Wintertiel or "Lives of the Saints Summer and Winter Parts" The most widely diffused vernacular legendary in medieval Europe. Though often said to be a translation of Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea, and is catalogued with it, in reality it only uses the Legenda aurea as one of several sources. Its popularity made it a target for one of Luther`s lampoons in 1535. Johann Bamler in Augsburg printed it on Oct 4, 1480. This small folio leaf measures 248 x 170 mm in totality and contains 29 lines of gothic type printed single column in German. At the bottom of the page is a 75 x 68 mm hand colored woodblock print of the Apostles featuring St. Peter with his key. The Verso: contains 31-lines of unadorned text. This leaf contains foxing.
